I'm retired from Xerox Corp after 32 years of service. I love to fish. Favorite fishing spot is Lake Orano, in Ontario, Canada, one of Viking Outpost's fly in lakes. I enjoy riding my bike and taking photos along the way. I try to play in a few community bands when I'm not fishing or in Florida for the winter. I have nothing profound to say or learn on this blog. I'm just using this as a journal to look back at some memories.

Doctor Month
This is the "doctor" month for me. I'm seeing all of them. Last week was the dentist, and then my annual physical. Next week is the skin doctor. I have only one question......why do a prostate check (ugh) if they do a PSA blood test? Help me understand that! I guess four crowns are in my future. I hate the thought of going through all that, but it can't be as bad as the cleaning the hygienist does. I just love the "Golden Years". HA!
I'm reading the latest James Patterson book.....Cross Fire. Got it from the library the first day it was released. Pretty good for a small town library! Gotta go read it now.

Summer is Over
This week, there is no doubt summer is over. It's cold, windy, rainy, and they are predicting snow. I'll be riding in the gym from now on. I leave for Florida on January 8th and should be there until March 10th or so. I made my reservations at a RV fishing resort. I researched different places like it and this one is the best I can find. http://www.lakerousseaurvpark.com/camping.htm It's called Lake Rousseau RV and Fishing Resort. Only $475 a month for a site, and there is a huge lake which feeds into the ocean, so fresh and salt water fishing is available. Can't wait.

Windy Today
Riding today was really difficult with the wind as strong as it was. Now I know why the racing bikers lay low in the saddle. My fat body is like a sail on a sail boat! Been at Lakepoint quite a bit. Big news...I bought a truck on Saturday. Chevy Silverado! My favorite truck. Rides like a Caddy!

Now That's Better
Much better day today. I'm sure I'll be cussing in February, but this morning was pretty nice. Rode North on the trail, and turned around and went South to Hoff Rd. Lots of people on the trail today. I'm starting to recognize the same people, doing what they do day after day. Mostly old folks, trying to maintain some sort of stamina. I even see some gray hairs running. Good for them....my running days are over. I'll stick to the bike.
Got my blood test results back. Cholesterol is 203. I expected it to be worse. I have eggs almost every day. Doctor wants me to give up eggs for awhile. I love the smell of eggs in the morning!

Great weather
Finally, the humidity is gone. Seems that's all I talk about. I guess when you are riding, one of the most important parts of the ride is the weather, so today was the perfect day to ride. Going to the doctor at 4:30. Not a fun afternoon.

Heat Advisory Today
Rule # 1....check the weather before you go riding. (from my personal trainer, Suz) So, I went to the gym instead of riding outside today. There bike does not go anywhere, and it's boring, but it's better than getting heat stroke. I tried to go outside, but I could not breathe it was so hot and humid. No big deal, as long as I have the gym to fall back on. I'm going to hide in the house for the rest of the day.

Never too old
I left for my ride at 7:00 am this mornig. Rode for about 45 minutes and went by this kids play thing. No one was there, and I was tempted. (very bored lately) Met Butch and Bruce for breakfast at the LA Cafe in New Lenox after my ride. I'm now deciding if it's too hot to go to Lakepoint today. I think it is.

Wild flowers and corn
Had a blood test done this morning, and then I went for my ride. The man who took my blood was my doctors father. He's got to be in his 80's and is a doctor himself. He was great. Painless as well. By the time I got on the road it was 10:45, hot and humid. Not a dry spot on me again today. Can't wait for cooler weather......with no wind!

To go or not to go
I went. It was humid, but I decided what the heck. My sore legs felt better, and as it turned out, it was a nice ride down the trail. Not a dry spot on me when I got back, but I suppose that's a good thing. I have to adjust the seat a little as I'm slipping forward a little. Have no plans for the rest of the day, so I think I'll finsh the book I've been reading. A Reacher novel by Lee Childs. I don't learn anything, but it's entertaining.

Sunday morning and still cool out
It's Sunday morning and it's still cool. 72 it says at the bank. I felt the humidity coming as I finished my ride this morning. It's going to be a very warm week. Legs are sore this morning. Maybe I should take a day off and just walk instead. We'll see.

Back home
Came back home from Lakepoint yesterday. Spent about 4 days there. Rode my bike every day on that damn gravel, but made my way out to the frontage road. Trouble with the frontage road is that everyone goes about 60 and scares the shit out of me sometimes. I'm wearing a bright yellow and green jacket that Butch gave me (borrowed from the State of Illinois) to help drivers see me. The heat is coming back today and the humidity too. Have to ride early in the morning for another week. The photo is something I told Suz I could do too!

Longest ride yet
Left for my ride about 8:15 am. I did my usual route and then decided to go to Ranch Oaks and back. Really an easy ride. I discovered a new development that went belly up. All the roads are in and street lights up, but not a singe house or foundation. Sign of the times I guess.

First nice day in a long time
Finally the heat and humidity are gone. It's about 82 degrees and really comfortable outside. Went for two bike rides today! I'm still at Lakepoint, so I rode out to the golf course entrance on the frontage road and back...twice. Days like this I feel I could ride for a very long. time. Also did some fishing on the deck. This is the life!

At Lakepoint Club chillen out. What a great day. Riding here is hard because of all the gravel, but it can be done.

What a miserable day! I went for my ride at 8:00 and it was so humid I could hardly breath. Had to cut my ride short. came back and sat on the driveway for a few minutes to cool down. Today is supposed to be the hottest and most humid day of the year. Gonna hunker down in the coolest room in the house.

July 22, 2010

Another ugly day, but not as hot, just very humid. Went for a bike ride about 8:15 in the morning. Went further than I ever have this morning. Got up to the 9 mile marker. The trail South of me is very secluded, but it blocks a lot of the wind and keeps you in the shade most of the time. Not much else going on. Went to my mothers last night for her 81st birthday. All the siblings pitched in and bought her a lap top. Poor Johnny is stuck helping her learn. This is going to be fun.

July 18, 2010

Had 5 grandkids sleep over last night. Very interesting to say the least. I woke up early and they were all up and playing at the kitchen table. A good time for me to go for a bike ride.
Last night was a concert in Wheaton with the Joliet American Legion Band. It was 92 degrees and humid. It was horrible in those damn wool uniforms. Got to be a better way.

It's Sunday, and I have a busy day ahead. I have rehearsal with the New Lenox Band and it's Austin's birthday party starting at 3:30. Rehearsal starts at 4 so I will be a little late for the birthday party.
Yesterday it rained all day. Hot and humid too. Today looks a lot better, and not so humid. Not much else going on. Guess I'll go on the internet and check stuff out.

Unbelievable! Got bit by something while fishing at Lakepoint. Face swelled up and it still hurts. The fishing gods must be upset with me.

June 4th, 2010
What a few weeks I've had! Before I left for my fishing trip I wound up with a tooth ache and had to have it pulled. The antibiotics I took, ampicillian, gave me an allergic reaction...a rash all over, so I had to go see my doctor who gave me a steroid pack. It worked and by the 3rd day in Canada, the rash and the itch went away.
The fishing at Lake Orano was the best I've had in a lot of years. The weather, however, was another story. We had about 3 days of sun and warm temperatures, and then the weather turned to shit. Wind, cold, rain, all together made for a pretty miserable combination. We were supposed to be picked up on Friday and as it turned out, they never came because of the weather. We waited until Sunday afternoon, about 5:00 for the plane to arrive. I almost wish it did not arrive, as the weather was terrible. Low clouds made the visibility next to zero! We flew about 200 feet above the trees, and had to set down short of Red Lake for about 5 hours for the weather to get better so we could continue on. Pretty scary plane ride. The pilot looked to be about 16 years old, which made my anxiety level a little higher. But, we all made it back safe and sound and wound up driving home on Memorial Day with all the nuts and drunks on the road.
All in all a real adventure this year. Have to think about next year at this point. I may be getting a little to old for this type of fishing trip. Hate to admit it, but it might be true.

It's Saturday morning, and I usually go to breakfast with the boys. Today Butch is in Florida, and Larry is in Texas, so I did not go. So this is a good chance to write on my blog.
Tomorrow is Easter so some of the family is coming to the house for dinner. Not a big holiday as far as I'm concerned but I have no choice in the matter I suppose.
Not much is happened since the last post . Still waiting for Lakepoint to open, but it's now only 6 days away. I've done a little fishing around here because we have had some great weather lately. 80 degrees the past few days. Caught a 3 lb largmouth in the pond around the corner from the house.
The Joliet American Legion Band is doing great. We have a few new members this year, and the sound is just awesome. It will be a pretty good year for this band.

Well, another day waiting for Lakepoint to open. Weather was nice but not warm ewnough yet. About 52. Went to Discount Tires and had the tires rotated on the Dakota. They are like new, and I want to keep them that way. Reciever on dish network went out AGAIN and I only have TV on TV2. What a pin in the ass. New reciever on the way. this is the 3rd one. I'm going to look for a new service tomorrow. Have to watch dancing with the stars with only one TV in the house. I think I'll go practice my horn instead.

Today I had breakfast with Butch. On the way to the restruant Butch called and said our friend Larry had a heart attack last Saturday in Wisconsin. He had stopped breathing for 8 minutes and was in intensie care at St. Lukes in Milwaukee. Reaaly a shock. He lost all kinds of weight and thought he was taking care of himself. Skinny or not, blocked arteries will get you every time.
Today is sunny and warm, but the news from Larry's wife makes it a not so good day.

Tonight I went to Paulie's house to say goodbye to Mike and Mark. I'm kind of bumbed out. I know the twins are excited about their new adventure, but I know it's killing my little brother. Paul is not subtle about his fellings about them leaving, and I can feel the pain he is feeling. I know there is not much you can do.....they are 24 years old....but it still bothers me. I gave them both my card with my address and email address. I hope they write me and let me know how they are doing. We have some time before we really have to worry about them. But that time will come, I'm sure. They have skills that the Army needs, and I'm sure they will use them.
Tonight we set the clocks ahead an hour. Really dumb, but we still do it.
God, I am bumbed out.

Well, I'm not sure how I am going to use this, but I'm thinking I'll just write down what I do every day and see what happens. I'm looking to stay busy and keep the mind sharp since I am retired and do not work. Maybe this will keep me sane until it's fishing season.
